How to Find X% of a Number (Fast Methods)
Need X% of a number? Use these fast methods: move the decimal, use 10% and 1% building blocks, fractions, or a calculator. Examples included.
Almost every "percent of a number" question is really one of two situations. Either you want a tip in your head at a restaurant, or you want an exact figure and you already have a calculator in your hand. Those call for different methods, so I'll split them that way instead of listing five interchangeable tricks.
Underneath all of it is one formula: X% of N = (X / 100) × N. 15% of 80 is 0.15 × 80 = 12. Everything below is just a faster route to that number, or a way to avoid the mistakes people make when they reach for the calculator.
With a calculator: shift the decimal, then multiply
Percent means "per hundred", so X% is X with the decimal point moved two places to the left. 7% is 0.07. 32% is 0.32. 125% is 1.25. Multiply that by your number and you are done.
- 7% of 250 = 0.07 × 250 = 17.5
- 32% of 60 = 0.32 × 60 = 19.2
On a phone you can type 250 × 7 % if the app has a percent key, or just 250 × 7 / 100. One warning: don't move the decimal and keep the percent in your head at the same time. 7% is either 0.07 or "7 divided by 100", never both. Doing both is how 7% of 250 accidentally becomes 1.75.
In your head: build it from 10% and 1%
This is the method actually worth learning, because it works on any number with no calculator. 10% of anything is that number with the decimal moved one place. 1% moves it two. Then you add the pieces.
Take 23% of 480:
- 10% of 480 = 48, so 20% = 96
- 1% of 480 = 4.8, so 3% = 14.4
- 96 + 14.4 = 110.4
Tipping is where most people use this. On a $63.40 bill, 10% is $6.34, half of that is another 5%, so 15% lands around $9.50 and 20% around $12.70. You never need exact cents on a tip, so round as you go and stop fussing over the last digit.
Halving your way to 50%, 25%, 12.5%
Some percents are fractions in disguise, and halving beats multiplying every time:
- 50% is half
- 25% is half of a half
- 12.5% is half again (an eighth)
- 20% is a fifth, 5% is a twentieth
12.5% of 64? Halve three times: 32, 16, 8. No decimals at all. And 35% of 200 is just 25% (50) plus 10% (20), which is 70. Mixing one fraction shortcut with a 10% block handles most "awkward" percentages faster than setting up 0.35 × 200.
The repeating-decimal ones: use the fraction
A handful of percentages are ugly as decimals and clean as fractions. 33.33...% is exactly 1/3, 66.66...% is 2/3, 16.66...% is 1/6. Punch these in as decimals and you round, which quietly loses accuracy. As fractions they stay exact.
- 33.33...% of 90 = 90 / 3 = 30
- 66.66...% of 120 = 2 × (120 / 3) = 80
This bites hardest with money, where rounding 33.33% down to 0.33 shorts you a cent or two on every single line.
Percents above 100% are not special
125% of 40 trips people up because it feels like the answer should be smaller than 40. It isn't. 125% = 1.25, so 1.25 × 40 = 50. Or read it as 100% (the whole thing, 40) plus 25% (10). Anything over 100% just means "more than the original", which is exactly what a 25% markup or a 130% year-over-year number is telling you. The mistakes that actually cost you
Three, roughly in order of how often they show up:
- Skipping the divide by 100. 15% is 0.15, not 15. Multiply by 15 and your answer is a hundred and fifty times too big.
- Confusing "percent of" with "percent change". 15% of 80 is 12. Increasing 80 by 15% gives 92. Those are different questions, and if yours involves a before and an after you want percentage change instead of this.
- Rounding too early. Round every intermediate step and the errors pile up. Keep the decimals until the final number, then round once.
