Percentage of Total: Formula and Examples

A compact guide to finding what percent one part is of the total, with a simple formula and practical examples.

The formula in one line

To calculate percentage of total, divide the part by the total and multiply by 100.

Percentage of total = (part / total) * 100

How to calculate it

  1. Identify the part value.
  2. Identify the total value.
  3. Divide the part by the total.
  4. Multiply by 100.

Example 1

A team made 18 sales out of 60 total sales.

  • 18 / 60 = 0.3
  • 0.3 * 100 = 30%

The team made 30% of total sales.

Example 2

A student answered 42 questions correctly out of 50.

  • 42 / 50 = 0.84
  • 0.84 * 100 = 84%

The student got 84% of the total correct.

When this is useful

  • Budget categories
  • Sales shares
  • Survey responses
  • Test scores

Common mistakes

  • Dividing the total by the part instead of the part by the total
  • Using numbers that are not from the same whole
  • Forgetting to multiply by 100

FAQ

Can the result be more than 100%?

Yes, if the part is larger than the total you entered. In most percentage of total cases, that means one of the inputs is wrong.

Is this the same as finding X% of Y?

No. Here you already know the part and the total, and you want the percentage. In X% of Y, you already know the percentage and want the amount.

Can I use decimals?

Yes. The same formula works with decimals as long as the part and total use the same unit.
